Joni Boyd, PhD, RDN, CSCS*D

 Hi, I’m Joni!

From Athlete to Educator to Performance Coach

Fitness, performance, nutrition, and helping others become their strongest has shaped nearly every stage of my life.

I grew up playing sports, but my journey into performance training truly began as a Division I softball athlete at University of North Carolina Wilmington. As a student-athlete, I quickly learned the discipline, resilience, and balance required to perform both academically and athletically. It was also my first real experience training in a collegiate weight room — and I loved it.

I became heavily involved in team conditioning and developed a passion for strength and performance training. During that time, I discovered there was a profession dedicated to helping athletes improve performance, and I immediately knew that was the career path I wanted to pursue.

After earning my degree in Exercise Science, I moved to Tampa, FL to try out for women’s professional football.  I earned a starting position as quarterback for the Tampa Tempest, a member of the Women’s Professional Football League. No, there wasn’t a million-dollar contract attached to it — but I was a professional athlete, and it remains one of the most unique and rewarding experiences of my life.

Education & Research

I returned to the Carolinas and earned my Master of Science in Sport and Fitness Administration from Winthrop University, followed by my PhD from University of South Carolina. I began my education career at Winthrop University in 2014.

My passion for learning and helping others continued to evolve throughout my career. Since then, I have completed two additional master’s degrees in Learning Design and Education and Human Nutrition, while also earning my Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential. I have conducted research related to performance, nutrition, body composition, and health variables among collegiate and general populations, and I have pursued numerous certifications in strength and conditioning, fitness, nutrition, and performance enhancement.

But beyond the degrees, certifications, and research, my perspective has also been shaped by life experience.

As an athlete, coach, professor, registered dietitian, and mom, I understand that performance and wellness are not one-size-fits-all. Over time, I have developed an even greater appreciation for the unique needs of women throughout different phases of life — especially active women balancing careers, families, health goals, hormonal changes, and personal performance.

As an athlete, coach, professor, registered dietitian, and mom, I understand that performance and wellness are not one-size-fits-all.

My Mission Today

Today, my mission is twofold:
to help athletes train intelligently and confidently while developing long-term performance habits, and to help women build sustainable fitness, nutrition, and wellness strategies that allow them to feel strong, healthy, and capable in every stage of life.

I believe exercise and nutrition should improve your quality of life — not control it. My approach combines evidence-based training and nutrition with realistic, individualized coaching designed to help people perform at their best both physically and mentally.

Whether you are a competitive athlete, a parent of an aspiring athlete, a woman navigating changing health and fitness goals, or someone simply wanting to feel stronger and healthier, my goal is to help you become the best version of yourself.
